The slow cooker is commonly used in the winter and fall season because it’s a convenient way of making dinner without a lot of thought. However, it’s also used in the warmer months, especially when you have more apples in hand. The following exposes Jennifer from Savour Simple’s way of using this smart solution.

Slow cookers are great for preparing homemade applesauce. It’s a convenient way of doing so, and it would allow you to focus on other things while preparing the dinner. It’s also healthy for kids and adults, and it could be a great snack for when your kids come home from school. It’s a side dish that’s prepared incredibly fast.

Any of the PickMee apples are going to be appropriate for the recipe, but combining sweet and tart ones would be even better. On top of that, once the applesauce has finished, you can always throw a pinch of lemon juice to add that extra acidity or a bit of sugar if it’s not sweet enough. Lemon is also going to make sure that the applesauce is preserved for longer so you can consider using it if you want to freeze the dish. In the most cases, you won’t need to add sugar as the apples are sweet enough on their own.

In any case, the larger you chop the apples the more texture is the dish going to have. The ideal size is between 1 and 2 inch per piece. If you want to save time, you can get some inexpensive pealing devices which are definitely going to help you with it. In any case, you should know that you can place the applesauce in the fridge for about 5 days, or you can keep it frozen for about 3 months, without it losing its qualities.

Ingredients:-

  • 5kg apples (a combination of sweet and tart is the best )
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • ¼ cup of water
  • Kosher salt – just a pinch
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter, 2 tablespoons of cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of grated nutmeg.

How to do it:

  1. First, you want to peel, core as well as to chop the apples.
  2. After that, you have to place them, along with the water, salt and lemon juice within the cooker and mix them with the optional ingredients if you went with them. Stir and close the lid.
  3. Cook on low setting for about 8 hours or for 4 if you go with high setting
  4. If you want smoother consistency, you can pure the applesauce in a blender.
  5. Serve it when warm or store it within the fridge for about 5 days.
